"Artful Lodger Newport, Rhode Island - My boyfriend and I have stayed at MANY bed and breakfasts because we like the homey comfortable feel and atmosphere. The artful dodger was both small and uncomfortable. To begin with, our room which was described to have a "king sized bed" had two twin sized beds pushed together. The middle portion prevented us from being able to sleep next to one another and the fact the bed on the right was at a slight angle made it VERY uncomfortable. Breakfast was not particularly amazing, the first day consisted of french toast with two nearly see through paper thin crispy pieces of bacon and no options or menu are posted. Additionally, because they say come up whenever you want we arrived at 9am (which was apparently when everyone else showed up) to find the one breakfast table full. We were then offered to sit out on the unstable looking deck at a dusty/dirty table, being that the table was full we didn't have much of a choice. The second day we were the only ones present and were served some overly seasoned eggs with a toasted stale bagel. I couldn't even eat it. It was very disappointing and not at all how either of us imagined it to be. No redeeming qualities at all. Additionally, the tiny 13" television was old and although it had a VCR built in was pointless because there are no movies or VHS tapes offered, the remote channel button didn't work either so changing channels had to be done manually. The tiny bathroom wasn't anything exciting and the chipped toilet seat could easily be replaced for $10. The broken lamp, although antique looking, did not add any appeal. I'd like to think the other rooms might have been better but I find it hard to believe. In summary, when we left, staff said "hope you come visit newport again" I noticed she didn't say "come visit us again" since clearly she could tell we weren't thrilled. "

"Artful Lodger B & B, Newport, RI - I was drawn to the Artful Lodger B & B by their website and so I called in advance of making a reservation. The person was very evasive to most of my questions and did not seem very enthusiastic.
Anyway, I intuitively decided not to book a stay there. We drove by the Artful Lodger and I had my husband let me go in just to check it out for future reference to see how it was. Well, I was met at the door by a very sour-faced young lady who did agree to give me a brief tour of the inn. This place was a disaster. The decor was old, unkempt and worn out. I could not believe that they actually expected people to enjoy a stay there. It reminded me of an old spinster's residence. It was musty and depressing with extremely small guest rooms, a very narrow staircase and a tiny common room on the top floor where breakfast was served. The website spoke of the beautiful view from this room. It was a good view, but who could enjoy it when in such a shoddy environment?
Unbelievable......Just beware.....do not stay here. There are so many other choices in Newport. "
